Jada Pinkett Smith fondly recalls a daring declaration of love for her husband, Will Smith, during a memorable trip to Jamaica. In her memoir, “Worthy,” she reflects on the roots of her connection to the island, where her grandmother was born and where she embraced local traditions by giving her children two middle names.

Their love story began in the early 1990s when they were introduced by mutual friend Duane Martin. Despite initial hesitations, fueled by Will Smith’s then-marriage to Sheree Zampino, their romance blossomed after Zampino filed for divorce in February 1995. The couple embarked on a whirlwind romance filled with lavish gestures and luxurious getaways, including a Thanksgiving vacation in Jamaica.

In a candid chapter of her memoir, Jada recounts a heated argument with Will sparked by a phone call with Zampino’s family. Insecurities surfaced, exacerbated by a bit too much rum punch, leading Jada to seek reconciliation in an unconventional manner.

Taking a daring leap, both figuratively and literally, Jada climbed onto the roof and jumped into the pool, professing her love for Will mid-air. Despite the risks, her bold move paid off, drawing a smile from Will and ultimately bringing them closer together.

Their love story continued to unfold over the years, culminating in their marriage in 1997. While their journey has seen its share of public scrutiny and challenges, including a highly publicized separation and recent controversies, their bond remains resilient, rooted in shared experiences and unwavering affection.

Sean Paul’s third studio album, “The Trinity,” has been officially certified 2X Platinum in the United States, by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Achieving this milestone signifies sales and streaming equivalent to 2,000,000 units in the country as of Thursday, March 28th.

Originally released in September 2005, “The Trinity” swiftly attained platinum status within just five months. This marks another significant achievement for the 18-track album, following the success of Sean Paul’s previous platinum-selling album, “Dutty Rock,” which is currently certified 3X Platinum in the US.

Recorded entirely in Jamaica, “The Trinity” boasts collaborations with renowned producers such as Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett, Rohan “Jah Snowcone” Fuller, Steven “Lenky” Marsden, Craig “Leftside” Parks, and Supa Dups.

Featuring vocal contributions from artists like Wayne Marshall, Nina Sky, Tami Chynn, Looga Man, and Kid Kurup, the album also saw an expanded international edition with additional collaborations including Carlos Santana, Joss Stone, and Rihanna on “Break it Off.”

The standout track “Temperature” emerged as a chart-topping hit, marking Sean Paul’s second solo No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after “Get Busy” from “Dutty Rock.” Additionally, “Temperature” has achieved triple platinum status in the US and double platinum in the UK.

Other notable tracks from “The Trinity” include “We Be Burnin’,” which peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100 and certified platinum, and “Give It Up To Me,” featuring a version with Keyshia Cole reaching No. 3 on the Hot 100 and earning Gold certification.

“The Trinity” album peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart, No. 1 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, and No. 11 on the UK Albums chart. It currently holds Platinum certification in the US and Gold in the UK.

Sean Paul, a prominent figure in the Dancehall music scene since the early 1990s, has released eight studio albums to date, starting with “Stage One” in 2000. Notably, “Dutty Rock” earned him a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2004, while “The Trinity” secured a nomination in the same category in 2006.

With eight Grammy nominations under his belt, Sean Paul continues to leave his mark on the music industry, with recent albums “Live N Livin” and “Scorcha” reaching respectable chart positions on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.

  • The warrant that was reportedly out for Skeng was an error on the part of the court’s staff.
  • Skeng who was in Los Angeles with Nicki Minaj last week was present at court this afternoon.
  • Attorney Christopher Townsend made an application to set the matter for another date which the judge agreed to.
  • Skeng had no previous run ins with the law and Townsend made it clear to WMV that this matter would not attract a finger print.
  • Skeng was arrested along with two members of his entourage at the Norman Manley International airport in Kingston, Jamaica last May.

Skeng, the Jamaican dancehall recording artist, was overjoyed when his airport disorderly behavior case was dismissed in a corporate area court on Thursday (March 9, 2023).

Attorney Christopher Townsend, who represented Skeng in the matter, told World Music Views that the warrant that had previously been issued was an error on the part of the court‘s staff. At the court hearing, Townsend argued that it would be an abuse of process to allow the prosecution to have another adjournment after the case had already been there for almost a year.

Skeng, who was in Los Angeles with Nicki Minaj last week to announce new acts signed to her label, was present at court this afternoon. The judge agreed with Townsend‘s argument, and the case was dismissed without a fingerprint being taken.

The 21yearold recording artist had been arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica last May, while on his way to a show in Trinidad. He was charged with disorderly behavior and resisting arrest. After being offered bail, Skeng appeared before the court for the first time on June 21, 2022.

Broadcast Commission Executive Director Cordel Green is responding to the recent halt directive to local media outlets that they should immediately desist from playing songs and videos that promote violence, scamming and drug use.

The director speaking with Dancehall Report from Geneva Switzerland via WhatsApp messenger said there is “no list” of songs to be banned but the directive applies to any song that fits the description outlined. On Tuesday the Jamaican music community reacted to the news of the Jamaica’s Broadcasting Commission’s “Halt On All Versions Of Music & Music Videos That Promote Violence & Drugs Use”

The statement issued today under the heading “BROADCAST COMMISSION ISSUES DIRECTIVE ON SONGS PROMOTING ILLEGAL ACTIVITY” outlines that television and radio stations operating in the island should halt “any audio or video recording, live song, or speech which promotes and/or glorifies scamming. illegal use or abuse of drugs (e.g. ‘Molly’), illegal or harmful use of guns or other offensive weapons, “jungle justice” or any other form of illegal or criminal activity.”

Cordel Green, Executive Director Of The Jamaica Broadcasting Commission

According to the Commission’s website the entity is mandated by the Broadcasting and Radio Re-diffusion Act (BRRA) to monitor and regulate free-to-air television, broadcast radio and subscriber television (Cable) services to ensure their operation at appropriate levels in relation to technical, programming, and service standards.

In the last four years much of the music that has saturated Jamaica’s airwaves first got recognition via YouTube and other streaming platforms and then radio disc jocks include edited versions of those songs in their playlists.

That practice can no longer happen for songs that fall in the category stated as the Commission further stated that all edited versions of songs that had the promotion of illegal activities should not be played on the airwaves.

“Any edited song which directly or indirectly promotes scamming, illegal drugs, illegal or harmful use of guns or other offensive weapons, jungle justice, or any form of illegal or criminal activity. This includes live editing and original editing (e.g. edits by producer/label) as well as the use of near-sounding words as substitutes for effective lyrics, expletives, or profanities.”

Dancehall artist Skeng has the two most streamed songs in Jamaica as more and more young people are moving away from radio and television as their main mode of consumption.

Radio Disc Jock Bloodline Franco of Fame FM told our affiliate World Music Views that his organization had already take steps to ban the songs containing drug use and violence.

“The RJR Gleaner group has already take a stand in house, so for any DJ in the RJR Gleaner group we were not able to play these songs regardless, but I think there will be some dissonance between what the younger demographic wants and what can be played on air. So we have to see if the radio listener will be appreciative of the difference in catalogue in what you hear in the parties vs in the radio,” he said.

“Or will they use new media and new platforms that technology provide for their fill of music vs listening to traditional broadcast radio. The onus is now on radio DJ and radio producers to add more value than just talk with more radio personalities other than just playing song A and Song B. This will force radio to have to do more to engage the listeners. We can no longer relay on ready made hits,” he continued.

Franco said artists like Skillibeng, Squash and Intence and other artist who do hardcore dancehall are really in favor now, so young listeners know their songs. Radio disc jocks capitalized on their popularity when they go on the radio. Still he says the ban may not apply to older songs from Bob Marley and Gregory Isaacs which are noted to reference the use of marijuana.

“I do believe Bob Marley songs like Kaya that mention marijuana or Gregory Isaac’s “Night Nurse” will still be played because it’s not as explicit as the newer songs.”

Franca said the prejudice lies in the how vs the what, “It is the way artists express their songs vs what they are expressing,” he concluded.

Producer Stephen Di Genius responded sarcastically to news of the halt from the Broadcast Commission, “Yay!!  Crime and violence gonna magically stop now . Jamaica the most sample place on earth.”

Di Genius followed up by saying, “Just another manifestation of the lack of accountability from the powers/showaz that be. It’s always gonna be music that’s causing all the issues . All if grace thrillers and love 101 start run di place crime won’t budge”

One comment on twitter said he is not convinced this will have the desired effect.

Music producer and promoter Romeich posted on instagram:

“While I understand why people feel like this and even I don’t agree with glorifying guns or any use of any drug at all, we can’t stop the creatives (artistes) from singing about what they see around them or grew around.
Jamaica has one of the strictest regulations against music, OUR OWN DANCEHALL MUSIC and what is to be played…so not even edited music can’t be played? Are you going to ban Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud and other platforms where the same people have the same access to the same songs? For example there are strict regulations against anything sexual (even edited) being played on local radio because children listen to radio…is Jamaica the only country that has children? Because the same children listen to these same songs elsewhere.
Ok if that’s the case since you want everything off of radio, what if promoters stop spending money on radio? Cause at this rate no one will be listening to radio soon cause all that will be on radio is international music ONLY so promoters won’t need to advertise there. Then what?”

Multiplatinum and billion streaming Producer Rvssian responded by saying, “Good thing we don’t need radio anymore. I can’t remember last royalties they paid me. 🤨. YouTube d ting Deh anyway.”

Producer Notnice also commented: “Waste of time, tell me the last song radio buss.”

Speaking with Dancehall Report exclusively about embattled dancehall artist Silk Boss is Attorney Shadae Bailey. The Kingston and Montego Bay based attorney who has represented clients in several ongoing high profile cases in the Jamaican courts says, the artist who has been identified as a ‘person of interest’ has a couple of options and she explained to Dancehall Report what the term means and what should be Silk Boss, real name Rohan Reid’s next move.

“He seems to be going through a lot and he is young man who needs help and directions in order to start his healing process. He should deal with this part with the police to begin the process of healing physically, professionally and emotionally from this incident,” she said. “No one wants to be subjected to such acts of violence, everyone needs the protection of the law and a lawyer can help,” she told Dancehall Report.

The 30 year old lawyer continued, “Person of interest is a term used by the Police when identifying someone possibly involved in a criminal investigation who has not been arrested or formally accused of a crime. This phrase may also apply to situation where a person may have information that would assist a current investigation, or possesses certain characteristics that merit further attention.”

Shadae A. Bailey, Attorney -at -Law.

“Simply put: a person of interest can be deemed a suspect in a criminal offense, or a potential witness in a criminal investigation. The police usually clears that up at the police station through discussions with the person of interest and his Attorney. When a person is listed as a person of interest, it is usually best that he or she retains the services of an Attorney to assist with the process” she continued.

Silk Boss did not turn himself in at the midday on Monday as per request of the St. Catherine South Police. However, it is reported by Dancehall Mag that the Mankind deejay contacted the cops to make alternative arrangements.

“He made contact with us and his lawyer also made contact. The necessary arrangements have been made,” senior superintendent Christopher Phillips, commanding officer of the St. Catherine South police, told Dancehall Mag.

Over the weekend, the Dancehall artist, whose real name is Rohan Reid, had been asked to report to the Portmore Criminal Investigations Branch by midday on Monday.

The St Catherine South Police said that their investigators had taken note of videos circulating on social media which showed Silk Boss being assaulted by masked men.

Attorney Bailey emphasized that, the role of the lawyer at this stage for Silk is important and may include but not limited to:

“1. Advising the client of his rights. 2. Protecting the rights of the client. 2. Preparing him for any investigative or procedural action that the police may deemed fit to use or execute, such as a detention or arrest. 3. The Attorney will seek to “clear” the status of the person of interest by ascertaining the “interest” and strategically deciding the way forward based on the information gathered. Potential action(s) of the Police may include: A. Conducting an “informal”Police interview; B. Conducting a formal interview (Question and Answer session) with the person of interest; 2. Conducting an Identification Parade. 3. Detaining the person until further notice. 4. Charging and arresting the person. 5. If he is a potential witness, the police may take a witness statement from the person. The action(s) of the police is subjected to their investigation or intelligence gathered. What advice I would give? Retain a Lawyer in order to protect his rights and his brand. The term ‘person of interest’ has a negative connotation to it, and as such it is important that he takes step to protect his brand.”

Brysco is lamenting his “fight” in the music business saying “people” are blocking his songs.

The Montego Bay based deejay said in a Live that, “Bare style ting some people deh pop did man career inuh, Man drop 10th floor and the song block bredda.”

He continued, “Me drop 10th floor, me hear people a seh me a one hit wonder, when you drop a big song them always a seh you a one hit wonder inuh.”

“Me get a text from YouTube me song get strike, so me a seh how me song get strike, YouTube a tell me seh yo if me believe seh this is a mistake me must appeal, me appeal fi the song, them put back the song pop YouTube but guess wah them shadow banned the song.”

Brysco bust out on the dancehall scene in 2022 with his YouTube No. 1 hit Code. He subsequently released 10th Floor.

10th floor is recorded on a rhythm similar Dr. Dre’s Next Episode, released on June 26, 2000 as the third single from his second studio album, 2001 (1999) featuring Snoop Dogg, Kurupt and Nate Dogg. It is a sequel to Dre and Snoop’s famous single “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” from the former’s debut album, The Chronic.

The song peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In February, World Music Views reported that the groundbreaking track hit number 1 on the digital sales chart for the first time after selling 20 thousand units in the aftermath of their Super Bowl Half Time Performance(February 13).

The song is licensed on YouTube (on behalf of WaterTower Music); SOLAR Music Rights Management, CMRRA, ASCAP, Warner Chappell, UNIAO BRASILEIRA DE EDITORAS DE MUSICA – UBEM, LatinAutor – Warner Chappell, PEDL, LatinAutor – SonyATV, Sony Music Publishing, LatinAutorPerf, and 11 Music Rights Societies.

Two weeks ago Ne-Yo was a guest on Drink Champs with DJ EFN and N.O.R.E and he was asked about the 14 year old song Romping Shop and why he didn’t clear the dancehall version. He admitted to the impact of the record but denied he had any input in whether or not the song could be used.

“I didn’t not clear it…the streets cleared it right away which made it virtually impossible to not clear it, even if I was thinking about not clearing it which by the way I was never thinking about not clearing it,” he said during the latest episode of Revolt’s Drink Champs podcast.

When World Music Views informed the producer of Romping Shop Notnice of the recent statements made by Ne-Yo, the Virgin producer said,

“It was mostly Vybz Kartel did deal with it and three different times the song haffi take down, even when we put up the video them take down the audio from the video.”

‘Romping Shop’ immediately became and local and diaspora hit when it was released in 2009 and EMI Music Publishing sent a cease and desist to Notnice and Vybz Kartel to remove the song from all distributions channels. This promted a do over which Notnice said was a frustrating process.

“When me build over the riddim me build over the riddim exactly and haffi take that down again, and this was after me haffi relicense that new record to VP records.”

The song has been licensed to three different recording companies and Notnice told World Music Views that at no time did Ne-Yo come to help make the process less difficult with a clearance.

EMI Music Publishing composers including Shaffer Smith (Ne-Yo), and producers Stargate explicitly stated in a letter that there was no clearance to sample Miss Independent at the time. The letter stated:

“Clearance of this use of ‘Miss Independent’ has not been sought or obtained and I am informed that clearance will not be forthcoming. Accordingly ‘Ramping Shop’ cannot be released or exploited in any way. Please confirm your acknowledgement and acceptance of this, and that you will arrange that (i) all recordings of the infringing track will be re-called and destroyed and that no further copies will be issued, and (ii) that the audio and/or video will be taken down immediately from all Internet sites.”

Notnice said, in response to that letter, Kartel was willing to meet them halfway and give up all the publishing rights to the song in order to allow it to remain in the public in the original format.

Ne-Yo also said in the Drink Champs interview that he was told who Vybz Kartel was and he was impressed with the song.

“Before the song was presented to me, the concept of Vybz Kartel and who he was was presented to me. Like, this is that dude oh, and by the way, ‘he did this with your song’. It was presented to me like that. So I’m like, so, what are we talking about right now? Of course it’s fine. Why would I have a problem with this?” he substantiated.

“To this day, I can’t be over there and perform Miss Independent without giving props to what the f-ck he did,” The One In A Million singer continued.

Notnice didn’t refute those claims, but says that didn’t stop the powers that be to stop the song. He recalls things being more hard-lined and against him, the Portmore Empire boss and a young and upcoming Spice.

“Kartel told them, them can take the publishing from cause we already admit it’s their beat and them say cease and desist same way. Maybe Ne-Yo never have much control that’s why him a seh what him a seh now,” Notnice Told World Music Views.

Brysco’s 10th Floor is still available for pubic viewing on YouTube albeit as he says, it is shadow-banned.The song has just under 900,000 views since its July 2 release.

As the return of Sting was announced at Reggae Sumfest in July, several acts have come out guns blazing lyrically at each other; dancehall newcomer Skeng took shots at Masica recently with the song Day Break, and Jahshii released two songs “Miggle Day” a few days ago and today he dropped “Dem Nuh Bad”, which  interpolates 90s artists Baby Wayne’s “Mama.”

Speaking exclusively with Dancehall Report on whether clashing is beneficial to the artist or the music industry is gold selling hit maker Tarrus Riley. The Simple Blessings artist says clashing is important for the culture ‘but only if it’s done the right way.’

“All of it is important and there is a way how to do it and it has to mean something to both artists. I don’t think anybody should clash if them nah go really clash on stage. Masicka is a lyricist and Skeng has an energy wah nuh normal but in the clash side of dem gonna clash just clash.”

Riley who collaborated with Masicka for the YouTube top den hit Corner last year says, “Clashing is a very good thing and make you get good but it’s not for everybody. It is not for everyone but for who it is, it’s entertaining.”

The accomplished reggae artist is a go to for international dub plates even though his music takes on a positive topic. Sound systems from as far as Japan have asked him to flip his conscious lyrics from time to time to go up against opponents.

Speaking with our affiliate World Music Views, Tarrus says artists nowadays, both young and established, should focus on giving the people more value.

“Imagine if you can clash and make big songs? That’s more business for you. Right now it’s a great time for our music cause we getting a lot of attention. I urge youth and youth to be part of it. There are so many artists, good artists that are qualified. Artists don’t be lazy, give the people something to talk about.

Singy Sings as he is affectionately called says he is proud of his fellow St. Thomas native Skillibeng who has earned a Hot 100 debut with Crocodile Teeth and making successful tour stops in the US, U.K. and Canada.

Nicki Minaj, Skillibeng at Young Money Reunion in Toronto Canada

“I am proud of youths like Skillibeng,” he says “Him must now go full speed ahead with no time to waste. Make some music. We have to have real evidence of success where a man sing and have lyrics. Can’t move the goal post cause internationally the standard is high. It’s like cooking, if you don’t know how to cook you nah go know how to cook so when time comes fi season the food you don’t know cause you never learn.”

Tarrus has several hits in both dancehall hits but he says for the next six months he will be focused on reggae music. His latest song Baby Blue was released last week.

He says reggae is important to the global music’s ecosystem and he plans to play a leadership role in maintaining the genre’s relevance globally.

“Don call me and say you a the leader of the thing and if you don’t lead the thing it cyah lead. Give reggae a 6 months and lead it. When I went to do the Costa Rica show, I check Don the next days. We record it. Me co-direct the video,” he recalls to World Music View in a late summer Saturday afternoon talk.

In the video, which Tarrus co-directed with Walu ,he tries to woo his lady over with a living room live show after she took issue with his bedroom phone call earlier.

“My offering is music, the video is a subliminal, I am showing the audience that a live music me a deal with and that’s what I have to offer,” he quips.

A poll commission by the RJRGLEANER Group found that 41 per cent of respondents believe that dancehall music played a very big role in influencing criminal behaviour.

Thirty per cent of persons polled said dancehall had ‘somewhat’ of an impact; 11 per cent only a little; while 11 per cent said not at all. Seven per cent of respondents were not sure.

In light of these public sentiments Anglican priest and human-rights advocate Father Sean Major-Campbell says he believes those who say dancehall influence crime are using the art form as a scapegoat.

He says the perspective as ‘misleading,’ arguing that blaming dancehall music for crime is a “course in obfuscation that leaves us with an anecdotal diagnosis of the problem”.

The Gleaner reported that the Don Anderson poll suggested that cumulatively, 82 per cent of all Jamaicans believe that there is a connection between dancehall music and the incidence of crime.

With Jamaica’s population being just under 3 million, the polls were done with a sample of 1,113 Jamaicans. Anderson admitted the views linking dancehall to crime were mostly held by older Jamaicans and the younger Jamaicans (18-24) were less convinced.

Major-Campbell argues that ‘Jamaica’s history of crime predates dancehall.’ He said that some people even use “religion to bless some forms of domestic violence”.

Meanwhile Stone Love Sound System founder Winston ‘Wee Pow’ Powell, told its modern dancehall that has contributed to crime as the artist are crime bosses.

“They become dons in their own way, and we all know how dons operate,” Wee Pow said in a Gleaner interview.

Stephen Di Genius McGregor

In an exclusive interview with Donovan Watkis of Dancehall Report producer Stephen Di Genius said they haven’t got to the root of the problem and violent dancehall lyrics work because it is relatable to what’s going on in the communities.

“Them usually quick to point at the music influencing the reality and nobody really takes account for the reality influencing the music,” Mcgregor explained.

“I think everything is perspective, and nobody really take account for the reality influencing the music and influencing how the people now are acting. For songs to get popular, and for artist to get popular and for figures to get popular they have to be doing something that is relatable. The artist himself cant force someone to like it. So when you see Skilli say Whap Whap of Brysco say ensure the song don’t work because them funny and people want to laugh after it, it works because there is something happening why it’s relatable,” he says.

“I read the other day in a book it says art was created to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. It disturbs some people but it a comfort the youth them cause music take them from God knows what they would be doing, society is changing, right or wrong thats what is happening. Not saying it’s ok, or good or bad but we can’t single out the youth them and say blame this and don’t look at anything else” The Red Bull and Guinness producer continued.

Another issue creeping up in dancehall is the use of hard drugs. With the advent of ‘Trap Hall’, songs like Pop Molly by No. 1 streaming artist Skeng and Navaz on the track Pop Molly with a music video laying out instructions on how to participate in the molly lifestyle.

The Molly theme is also consistent in Skeng and Sparta’s (Tommy Lee Sparta) Protocol. Molly culture is also celebrated in Intence’s No. 1 YouTube hit Yahoo Boyz.

Lawyers, doctors and other interest groups have made statements that ‘ecstasy’, is now accessible to children who were attending ‘pill parties’. Stephen says it is because Molly has become part of what inner city youths and artists who represent the inner cities of Jamaica are experiencing.

“Skeng dem sing bout that because that’s what they are experiencing around them, so to somebody now who probably live innah Jacks Hill, weh never ever go in the streets yet, who probably never hear bout Molly till it go in a song, the youth them probably already done innah dah world deh before, so to him, its just like ‘wow how could somebody dare sing about this and influence my kids’, but that’s what happening around them, people relate cause its relatable. Nothing is forces, its reality happening.”

Christopher Martin

Singer Christopher Martin told Dancehall Report that he doesn’t believe dancehall contributes to crime ‘fully’.

“No, not fully. Music is like a marketplace, you have buyers and vendors and you have to choose what you want. Some people might say yes and they might have strong points to it but there has always been violence. I don’t feel like if your favorite artist tells you this is what he does he will do it. Him don’t do it. It’s just how you interpret it. The PM and his friends have their experts that may show data but I don’t feel like it’s that serious. We can tone it down and it doesn’t have to be so graphic but at the end of the day, you can’t tell a man what to sing,” the singer said.

As dancehall take son different forms in countries like Trinidad the topic of violence remain in the music. Superstar Sean Paul gave advice to Trinibad artists Prince Swanny while speaking with Nigel Telesford of Overtime Media in Trinidad & Tobabgo. While praising Swanny for helping to keep Dancehall culture ‘live and living’ and for telling the stories about life on the Eastern Caribbean islands, he cautioned him about glorifying violence.

“So, that’s my only thing with the badness: meh just wha big up everybody who ah do music and say yes, yuh must reflect the badness that is in society cause yeah, because that is what the music is for, but also tell the real story dem – tell de story when yuh shoot somebody an afi go hide inna hill and yuh cyah see yuh baby mother nor yuh baby dem for months, yuh understand?,” he said.

Cham

Veteran dancehall star Cham also told our affiliate World Music Views that although he has made some songs in the 1990s that were controversial and were said to have caused havoc, he doesn’t responsibility for the impact in that time and the crime?

“I wouldn’t say the crime because the movie Killer came out and we saw this dude with a Glock 90 and he made on squeeze, that influenced rude boys but did they blame it on the movie? If the society is not reflecting what we are making in the studio. The reason why it connects is because that’s what’s going on. We normally watch the news and whatever we are seeing is what’s going on throughout the world not just in Jamaica. In Brazil, they tell their exact story. Music doesn’t influence crime, politics influence crime.”

Jamaica has one of the highest homicide crime rates in the world according to Statista. In 2021, there were approximately 49.4 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in the island nation. This was highest homicide rate in Latin America and the Caribbean that year. 1,463 persons were murdered that year, up from 1,323 victims the previous year.

Whap Whap deejay Skillibeng is enjoying the spoils of his fame as he seen rolling around in a new Lamborghini Urus. At a starting price of $200,000, the Urus accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 190 mph. Skillibeng was sure to keep both of his hands on the wheel as he maneuvered the high powered Italian made car.

The Urus is not traditionally referenced in dancehall with only a few artist and producers from the island gravitating to the high speed truck

Rvssian, who has enjoyed several years of success in the industry since 2018 purchased a brand new Lamborghini truck at the top of that year.

The international producer/recording artiste posted he was the first Jamaican to own the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine vehicle.

“#LOOKMAMA#IJustSpentAllMyMoneyOnALamboTruck ❤❤❤ #FirstJamaican ??‼,” Rvssian wrote under a photo of the luxury whip posted to his Instagram account.

The Urus was first unveiled on 4 December 2017 and was put on the market for the 2018 model year. The name comes from the urus, the ancestor of modern domestic cattle, also known as the aurochs. After four years, Lamborghini hit a major milestone, producing more than 20,000 of these SUVs, which is now the company’s best-selling model in the shortest time.

Dancehall artist’s love affair with cars one way they confirm their success. Prestigious cars serve as inspiration for artists and their songs are laced with those they deem to be the best. The purchase and mention of a nice car give dancehall artists credibility in the hip hop market, the same way the purchase of a helicopter gives bankers clout in their financial circles.

In the days of Asylum, Quad and Cactus night clubs, high-end Japanese and European convertible cars would line the streets of New Kingston as a symbol of status. Owing to the fact that Jamaica has high tariffs on imported vehicles, super luxurious cars like the Urus, Rolls Royce, Bentley or Ferrari are not frequently highlighted in Dancehall lyrics but whenever artist are overseas some would rent one or two.

The Coke deejay got to perform with Nicki Minaj recently in Toronto over a year after she hopped on a remix of his Crocodile Teeth song. The remix earned Skilli his first Hot 100 single when the song debuted at 100.

The Barbie Queen who has always had an affinity for reggae and dancehall music introduced Skillibeng to her millions of fans worldwide as she embraced the St. Thomas deejay on stage.

Skillibeng, 25, has been enjoying the endorsement of top flight women artists across continents. In July platinum U.K. Platinum selling rapper Stefflon Don joined the emerging star on the Wireless Festival stage.

Skillibeng says he believes he is the leader of this generation of dancehall artist.

“I think I am the leader of like the new generation, based off what stats are saying and shows,” he remarked during an interview On The Radar Radio.

“Alotta mah flows have been stolen, alot of my tactics that I teach in interviews have been stolen, I am not even saying tis been stolen,” he says with a pseudo America accent. Younger artist are taking my moves, taking my moves and doing what I teach them and i applaud them,” he continued.

“I am doing the work and it’s all about me doing the work, cause I have been doing the work over the years i been releasing alotta music. I been like putting in the work, bodies of work, I am the only person that like release a mixtape with 35 , 37 tracks going crazy,” he affirmed.

Last October Skillibeng dropped his second album Crocodile Teeth and music producer Johnny Wonder said Skillibeng will bridge the gap between dancehall and hip hop.

The album got disappointing reviews, but Wonder insisted that he is the one who will spark interest in dancehall again for North American markets and that Skillibeng’s presence in the music industry is the missing piece of the puzzle.

“Skillibeng is a great artist that bridge the gap”. Wonder proclaimed.

Since the “Brick Pon Brick” artist came on the scene a few years ago he has scored several international features with his catchy, slow rhymes including a remix of Whap Whap with French Montana and Fivio Foreign.

His first album released last June “The Prodigy: Ladies Only Edition” sold 25 copies in pure album sales in the United States in its first week, according to data provided to World Music Views by Luminate. Total consumption from pure album sales plus streaming equivalent albums was 300 units.

With a singular Billboard hit and handful of Jamaican YouTube No. 1s, the St. Thomas DJ has made successful tour stops in the U.K. and the US at the Wireless and Afropunk Festivals where he was well received by thousands of eager fans outside of his core base.
