Chronic Law- “Holistic Approach”

2022’s top YouTube streaming artist Chronic Law is sticking to the script and dropping music of a particular kind and dropping them often. His latest “Holistic Approach” revisits his outsider themes where the singer examines the dark recesses of his mind and questions other he was “born on the right planet.”

Ishawna “New Child”

Ishawna is back on the prowl with a new song titled “New Child” and a pink themed music video. In her usual man bashing style Ishawna DJs about her lack for moving on.

“Low me low low me low me” she sings as the lead singer of a choir in a European church hat. It is the highest  trending debut this week at No. 24

I difference in theme and sound from her last song “Brace It” featuring Ed Sheeran which was a groovy 90s inspired modern dancehall beat.

On “Brace It” the Only Fans content maker had matched Sheeran’s seductive energy back and forth as they suggestively said what they wanted to do to each other in nuanced dancehall lingua.

Vybz Kartel -“From Me Born”

Fresh from the news of his U.K. certification for “Fever” Vybz Kartel tackles social issues and questions liturgy with his anti-church lyric video for “From Me Born” examining the church’s role in society amidst all the atrocities and chaos during the pandemic.

3. 10Tik, Spragga Benz – “Badness A Badness”

10Tik draws for Spragga Benz whose voice is sampled from the “Shottas” movie but Spragga also offers a conscientious verse about street violence.

“Shenyeng Never Disappoint us!” that the word from one fan who commented on Shenseea and Skillibeng’s Rain music video released today “August 22.”

The song and video is the first collab for the two Jamaican rising stars who have been on successful European, US and Canadian tours. Shenseea, 25 has released at least one piece of musical content every month for the las year. The creative direction for this video however takes on a more creative approach.

Directed by Shane (Tory Lanez, Kodak Black,) the video angle upside down as Shenseea and Skilli coordinated rhymes with a cameo from her long time manager Romeich and her new manager Dizzycleanface who were both seen throwing money.

Shenseea

Prominent in the 1:53 second video is dancehall’s new favourite car brand Lamborghini on the roof top which is turned into a makeshift strip club. Skillibeng stays true to his bike culture and remedial lyrics as he follows up “Whap Whap Whap” with “Full Full Full Full” in response to Shenseea’s “Plus me clip them..”

As the return of Sting was announced at Reggae Sumfest in July, several acts have come out guns blazing lyrically at each other; dancehall newcomer Skeng took shots at Masica recently with the song Day Break, and Jahshii released two songs “Miggle Day” a few days ago and today he dropped “Dem Nuh Bad”, which  interpolates 90s artists Baby Wayne’s “Mama.”

Speaking exclusively with Dancehall Report on whether clashing is beneficial to the artist or the music industry is gold selling hit maker Tarrus Riley. The Simple Blessings artist says clashing is important for the culture ‘but only if it’s done the right way.’

“All of it is important and there is a way how to do it and it has to mean something to both artists. I don’t think anybody should clash if them nah go really clash on stage. Masicka is a lyricist and Skeng has an energy wah nuh normal but in the clash side of dem gonna clash just clash.”

Riley who collaborated with Masicka for the YouTube top den hit Corner last year says, “Clashing is a very good thing and make you get good but it’s not for everybody. It is not for everyone but for who it is, it’s entertaining.”

The accomplished reggae artist is a go to for international dub plates even though his music takes on a positive topic. Sound systems from as far as Japan have asked him to flip his conscious lyrics from time to time to go up against opponents.

Speaking with our affiliate World Music Views, Tarrus says artists nowadays, both young and established, should focus on giving the people more value.

“Imagine if you can clash and make big songs? That’s more business for you. Right now it’s a great time for our music cause we getting a lot of attention. I urge youth and youth to be part of it. There are so many artists, good artists that are qualified. Artists don’t be lazy, give the people something to talk about.

Singy Sings as he is affectionately called says he is proud of his fellow St. Thomas native Skillibeng who has earned a Hot 100 debut with Crocodile Teeth and making successful tour stops in the US, U.K. and Canada.

Nicki Minaj, Skillibeng at Young Money Reunion in Toronto Canada

“I am proud of youths like Skillibeng,” he says “Him must now go full speed ahead with no time to waste. Make some music. We have to have real evidence of success where a man sing and have lyrics. Can’t move the goal post cause internationally the standard is high. It’s like cooking, if you don’t know how to cook you nah go know how to cook so when time comes fi season the food you don’t know cause you never learn.”

Tarrus has several hits in both dancehall hits but he says for the next six months he will be focused on reggae music. His latest song Baby Blue was released last week.

He says reggae is important to the global music’s ecosystem and he plans to play a leadership role in maintaining the genre’s relevance globally.

“Don call me and say you a the leader of the thing and if you don’t lead the thing it cyah lead. Give reggae a 6 months and lead it. When I went to do the Costa Rica show, I check Don the next days. We record it. Me co-direct the video,” he recalls to World Music View in a late summer Saturday afternoon talk.

In the video, which Tarrus co-directed with Walu ,he tries to woo his lady over with a living room live show after she took issue with his bedroom phone call earlier.

“My offering is music, the video is a subliminal, I am showing the audience that a live music me a deal with and that’s what I have to offer,” he quips.

British rapper Stefflon Don dropped the first single from her debut album Island 54. The song titled Clockwork features Grammy nominated dancehall artist Spice.
Stefflon Don, Spice

The first verse goes to the Don as she aggressively laces the track , “Yuh 3.24 tight eeh, gyal angle yuh back 90, Pu**y degrees hotta than a pepper scotch eeh, Don Dodda woulda f*ck you pon backseat, put it een take it out, camera, amateur, gyal f*ck pon di scene,” she rhymes smoothly reminiscent of Vybz Kartel’s pace and timing.

The way she plays with her voice, she has mastered her craft in multiple genres but Clockwork is authentic dancehall.

The The hook is infectious and elicit at least a head bop on first listen. One minute in the song has all the ingredients of traditional dancehall and then Spice come in with her verse to add more explicit hardcore flavor to the track tail end.

“Bwoy love it love it when me kotch it one side gyal a cry fi di work but she never qualified, all di Pastor see dis and a try fi backslide/ride me a ride me nuh fuck man and hide/a suh me brack it and me siddung pon di top,” Spice flows in her signature style. This verse and collaboration is among Spice’s better features as she prepares for her sophomore album ‘Emancipated,’ which she says will be release independently.

Stefflon album is scheduled to drop in September on he own label 54 London, a subsidiary  of Universal Music.

“This is gonna be my first album,” Stefflon Don explained to Hunger magazine. “All the other stuff that I made like Secure and Real Ting, were just mixtapes. So, with this project, I’m taking it a lot more seriously.”

The MOBO award winner revealed that she drew inspiration from her family and friends throughout the two years she’s been working on the project.

“I just spent more time on it and thought, what do I really love?” she continued. And what do my family and friends really love the most? We’ve been working on this for a good two years so I can’t wait to let it out to the world. It’s just a vibe.”

She also said her Jamaican roots helped her to become one of the few U.K. artists to break into the U.S. market.

“Jamaican music travels very far outside of the UK,” Stefflon Don explained. “I feel like with the UK sound before it was very niche unless you’re a fan of grime but the sound has changed a lot since then. When I go to different countries, I now hear a lot of UK rappers, more than I used to before, I think it’s a good time. I think TikTok has had a big part to play in that.”

Back in June, Stefflon Don revealed that she explores a more vulnerable side of herself in her upcoming project.

“You know I can rap, you know I can sing, but how hard can I really go?” she teased. “It’s definitely showing even more versatility and making you know who I am from a vulnerability standpoint.”

The cover art for the lead single “Clockwork” has both artist wearing a Jamaican flag bikini and upper arm sleeves doing various poses.

As dancehall becomes more popular among mainstream rappers Jamaican bred artists are choosing to use the home based aesthetics as inspiration for their brands singles and marketing their albums.

Late July rising sensation Jahshii said he was renewing his artistry and focusing on less violent music. He said among other things he would be appealing to fans who want more substantial music. Those sentiments are now through the door as the young deejay who got his first claim to fame from an interview with Anthony Miller dropped ‘Miggle Day’ on Thursday. Miggle Day some are saying is a diss towards Silk Boss and top streaming artist Skeng.

Miggle Day produced by Active Record was released on YouTube with a music video directed by Ruption (Tarrus Riley, Shenseea). Jahshii sits mostly on a concert walk in the gritty neighborhood of Grants Pen Kingston as he spits “Murder, murderer, brand new puppy po the Burna,” he sings the heinous lyrics melodiously.

With lyrics like those and others we won’t repeat, Jahshii is ready to rejoin the very class and style of artists he denounced in an interview with Terro Don, as his friends cheered him on and geared “get up nuh man”, a term attributed to Masicka.

In the interview with Terro Jahshii said,

“Yeah, when yuh sing gun song and dem slack chune deh bro, if a man come tomorrow and a sing it madder, a dem yuh fans dem gone to.   But when yuh have song weh touch people heart dawg, a dem heart yuh win and not just dem brain, or dem jump or dem snap or dem follow, yuh nuh bro, yuh win dem heart.”

“Jamaica need dem ting deh.  Yuh haffi understand music and entertainment is a feeling and a vibe.  Yuh put people inna certain feeling and certain energy, yuh understand bro.  Das why yuh haffi know dat dawg and motivate people through music and  dem ting deh… Dat is weh me si a spot needed inna Dancehall, caw if me naw do dat, there is nobody who a guh do dat,” he said.

He added: “Mi a deal wid dat becaw dat is weh me si a lane weh nobaddy naw too do right now…  Yuh affi memba seh Jahmiel and Vershon dem forward out powerful and guh tun off enuh dawg.  Cause dem lose dem fan base, dem real, core fan base weh dem build up outta people heart.  Dem lose it and start guh to di likes and di comments fans dem.”

As Jahshii puts motivation aside and positions himself for a clash with Silk Boss and others, Unanswered deejay Govana gave advice to Silk Boss recently during his performance at a stage show in St. Mary. He explicity told Silk to keep his focus and avoid a clash scenario.

“Silk Boss everybody can enjoy your music, doh mek nuh man come wild you out and draw you inna nuh clash and dem wildness deh badman,” he explained.

“Keep your focus and be a big artist and not a hot artist, be a big artist and not a hot artist.”

He continued, “Big up Jahshii, big up Skeng, if a one thing with me, the youths dem haffi respect Govi Govi, cause Govi show all the youths dem respect,” he said. “Every ghetto youth can be rich and wealthy, every ghetto youth fi have tings and can take care of their family, right, which is right?”
